Chapter 7

New Leads

Isaac’s POV

Late that night, at around two in the morning, I got a new lead in the investigation of the case, and it caused my emotions to get the best of me. I made sure to provide Chris with an update on the issue as soon as I could by contacting his phone. I communicated this to him as best as I could.

(Picking up groggily) "Hello?" says Chief Chris.

"Chris, you won't believe what just happened!" I said while trying to suppress my excitement and shock at the same time.

Chris: "WHAT?" It's two in the morning, Isaac; what the heck is going on?!"

I began, "Chris," but my voice was tense from the stress. "We've reached a crucial point. I need you in the loop."

He replied in a calm, reassuring tone, "Isaac, take a moment. What is going on?"

With my thoughts racing in light of the recent events, I took a deep breath. "Emily's estranged family member Finn Kensington has become a key player. We think he has something to do with her death. The car we tracked down near Emily's house is his."

A pause on the other end showed that Chris was taking in how serious the situation was. "So, What's the plan, Isaac?"

I felt a rush of determination. "The next time Finn comes around, we'll catch him. We can also use him to get in touch with his dad and sister. We haven't found anything about this mysterious family so far."

Chris responded with worry and assurance. "Isaac, I believe in your skills. Be careful. We're venturing into unknown waters."

"I'm on it, Chief" I said, nodding to myself. We are now more than ever close to figuring this out.

Before revealing a shocking truth, I maintained a deliberate silence and said, "Moreover, Chris, I found something suspicious. The places Brian Kensington used his credit and debit cards to buy things fit where Emily went before, she was killed. He seemed to be following her around, waiting for the right time."

My words hit Chris like a ton of bricks. I added, "They both might have something against Emily to stoop this low," my tone showed that I was angry and shocked.

Chris accepted the new revelation's gravity with a calm response. "Isaac, that's vital information. It further closes in on the Kensington’s. You're doing a great job."

As I thought about what he said, I felt grateful. But suddenly, Chris's tone changed, adding a note of serious matter. "I need to tell you, Isaac, that the case of the bank robbery and kidnapping is getting very heated. The town is tense, and the news won't stop. They need to know the truth right away."

Knowing how important my duties were, I said, "I know, Chris. Even though we're juggling with cases, we can't let either case fall through the cracks. I will try to balance them both, but we need more resources."

Chris spoke decisively. "Isaac, I'll pull some strings. We'll get what you need. Please keep me informed, and for now relax."

When the call finished, I was left to figure out how to handle the complicated investigation.
